430-Honors Chemistry
Prerequisite: Conceptual Physics and Algebra I
Open to Grades 10, 11, 12 - 1.5 Credits Elective
This full year course is designed for students with exceptional skills in the areas of mathematics and science. To be considered for honors courses, students must be motivated, creative, and have a “B” or better average in previous content-related courses, and exceptional teacher recommendations. (Standardized test scores may be considered.) Topics include chemical formulas and equations, stoichiometrical relationships, electron configuration, kinetic molecular theory and states of matter, nuclear chemistry, acid-base theory, and chemical equilibria. The mathematical and theoretical nature of chemistry will be studied in greater depth than in Chemistry 432. This class meets an equivalent of seven periods per week.
432-CP Chemistry
Prerequisite: Algebra I
Open to Grades 10, 11, 12 - 1.5 Credits Elective
This course is a standard first course in chemistry. It is a laboratory oriented course for students who are preparing for a four-year education after high school. Topics include the molecular model of matter, the gas laws, molar relationships, stoichiometry, the periodic table, nuclear chemistry, acid-base theory, and chemical equilibria. Students perform many laboratory exercises as well as regular classroom work. Lab reports, numerous homework assignments, and chapter exams are required. The class meets and equivalent of seven periods per week.
